Fine Art Print FAQs
Created in 2014 in Beaufort, South Carolina by Gullah Artist Sonja Griffin Evans. This vibrant colorful painting tells a story of the Gullah Geechee people. Gullah is a culture and language that derived from the many Africans who were brought to the sea islands stemming from Wilmington, North Carolina to Jacksonville, Florida; known as the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. The Road to Freedom' depicts the spirit of Historic Penn Center, the first school for freed enslaved people in the south established in 1862 on St. Helena Island, SC. This piece masterfully captures a people proud of their culture and their heritage. It shows a people stepping out on faith to obtain the true American Dream, which is the right to freedom, a good education, land ownership and the development thereof; leaving a legacy for generations to come. 'I Have A Dream.'- The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
