Enrique Cattaneo
Enrique Cattaneo is a minimalist painter based in Cuernavaca whose textured landscapes — built from sand-mixed oils in subdued grays and ochres — distill the vast roads of Mexico and the world into quiet, contemplative planes.
Cattaneo works primarily in a square format on canvas or wood, layering sand into oil paint to build tactile foregrounds that give way to soft, ethereal horizons. His compositions are products of imagination rather than direct observation — interior distillations of landscapes encountered through a lifetime of travel. Alongside painting, he explores graphic techniques including etching, woodcut, and screen printing, expanding the reach of his restrained visual language across mediums.
Born in Mexico City in 1946, Cattaneo has built a distinguished career spanning decades of artistic practice, teaching, and publishing. As a Research Professor at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (UAEM), he has shaped generations of artists while maintaining a prolific studio practice and a sustained engagement with printmaking and editorial work.
