Last week, the Loupe Art team had the pleasure of welcoming Montréal-based artist STARE for lunch and a visit to Stingray HQ. Our time together left us incredibly inspired.

STARE is one of Montréal's most distinctive voices in contemporary public art. Rooted in stylewriting — an urban artistic movement born on the east coast of the United States in the late '60s — and this practice has evolved far beyond its origins.

STARE is known for his bold lettering, adventurous color schemes, and electrifying compositions. He has literally marked the face of Montréal's with murals that breathe fresh life into the city and has become synonymous with the urban landscape. (Stare | Art Public Montréal)

What makes STARE’s work so compelling is that it flows from an artist who approaches each new piece with a grounded approach, intentionality, and passion for the artform itself. Every piece is site-responsive, drawing from the materials, textures, and luminosity of its surroundings. (About — STARE)

STARE has been working on exciting new projects including Lightkeeper in Brest, France, to Teranga in Dagana, Senegal, to a vernissage this past September as part of Montréal's Format Festival. (CV — STARE) His group exhibition Sur paroles at the Musée de la civilisation in Québec City also made waves in 2024, further rooting his work, and the work of street artists in general, within the landscape of contemporary art.

Getting to know STARE and his work was a genuine highlight of our trip. We had lunch, immersive conversation, and dug deeper into his process, artistic vision, and where his work is headed next. We learned exciting new work where he collaborated with kids to bring imaginary creatures to life on walls.

It was enthralling to hear more about STARE's favorite work (his pieces in Senegal) and the art expeditions awaiting him. With travel to Africa and beyond looming on the horizon, there is a lot to be excited about, and we could not be more thrilled.

More to come soon. 👀
